I see with regularity women and men who dress nicely to go to the gym. Sometimes (mainly with women) they even have coordinated pieces that match! I know for some people, looking great in their gym clothes is motivating and helps them keep going-- and whatever works for them is terrific.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: there's times when I want to look nice, and then there's times when I want to avoid attention. To be honest, most of the time I don't like being looked at by people I don't know. I'm introverted, I don't like big groups of people, and I mostly dislike small talk (I like to get down to the meat of who people are, not discuss the weather and what we do for a living). Additionally, my reasonably curvy figure and rather youthful features (you'll have to take my word on that) leads a fairly large number of people to make assumptions about my personality and intelligence that are off the mark. Stereotypes: we all fall victim to them, even when we know they aren't true.
I guess this is actually one of the reasons I started caring about clothing and accepting my body for what it is. Ultimately, I can't hide my curves-- a baggy, ill-fitting piece of clothing will conceal my waist, but it can't effectively hide my breasts. But if I dress like an intelligent, professional curvaceous woman who appreciates herself, that might change people's impressions to one that's more accurate to who I am.
Then again, at the gym, I am not interested in making friends or small talk. I want to get in, work hard, and get out: ideally, with as few people looking at me as possible. My face will a-redden. I will sweat like crazy. I like those things, it means I'm doing the most with my time there. Ideally, I want an outfit that is:
- breathable and wicking (more comfortable when dripping sweat)
- allows free range of motion
- protects my skin (if applicable-- I do heavy-ish weight training, so on days in which I do back squats [it's hard to find a basic explanation of proper back squat form in a format that I find acceptable, sorry I don't have a more pertinent link] I want something that covers my upper back so I don't have the barbell on skin).
- I also don't want to look too attractive/ draw attention to my secondary sexual characteristics (i.e. T or A), but not at the expense of practical considerations.
Therefore, the best gym uniform I've found (so far) for my desires =
- Sports bra, mostly of the right size for my body. If my boobies are smashed flat by it? I don't care.
- Baggy tee-shirt. After losing 40 pounds, I have a lot already, since I had several with sentimental value that I didn't want to donate. I mostly wear men's graphic tees from Target, as I have many that I liked (they were once flattering, even). They're cotton, so they don't wick and aren't especially breathable, but they provide a bit of boob camouflage, they are long enough to cover even with arms extended upward, and they are thick enough to provide some skin protection.
- Athletic bottom. I have a pretty wide variety, from running skirts and shorts (for the summer) to stretchy, boot-cut athletic pants (better in the winter, so I don't need to change pants to leave if I'm not showering at the gym).
- My favorite brand for these is Kyodan, which I can almost always find at TJ Maxx (their tank tops are decent bra-free lounge-wear for around the house too-- relatively supportive for shelf bras). But I also have a smattering of Target/ Champion, and a few Nike running or tennis skirts.
- Wicking no-show socks (cotton free). I wear these most of the time anyway, so it's convenient.
- Flat sneakers. I mostly use my black Pace Gloves because they are the non-cushioned (cushioned shoes are not the best for weight training), non-disreputable sneakers that I have right now. (I say non-disreputable because they still look good, but I'm pretty sure they are well over a year old at this point. It's not like they had any cushioning to break down, and they aren't torn and dirty, so... good enough!)
Schlubby gym clothes pictures? Yes, I'm not too proud. I do go out in public like this, after all.

Summer gym clothes. Shirt is men's small from Threadless. These shorts are also kyodan. |
I feel like this isn't the best version of what I'm looking for in athletic wear, but it works for now. What are your priorities for gym clothes?
