Thin and Curvy recently posted about the "rules" for dressing busty women, and how they are overly restrictive-- what people should wear is what makes them feel good about themselves, and highlights their favorite features, while also feeling right for their personal style. Having a large bust does not mean you are excluded from enjoying your own personal style!
I've been thinking about that lately as well-- one of my main personal fashion rules once I became an adult was "No skinny jeans, or narrow-legged pants!" That wasn't an issue for quite some time, but then they came back into style... no big deal, I can maintain my personal style despite transient fashion trends, but then I realized how... practical they are.
They aren't necessarily the most practical option for every season and place, but when it starts getting cold, rainy, icy, and/or snowy there's very little in the way of bottoms that is more practical, easy, and stylish than a pair of narrow-legged pants tucked into a pair of boots. Do you know how many times I've tried to cram my wide-leg or flared pants into my pants to get into work without sopping wet, salty hems, only to have them fall out half-way to the building (and they look really silly in the mean-time)? I'll just say: many.
Also, even though I'll likely never see similar legs on a model, I like my legs. I can't really display them as a feature during the winter, but slim-fit jeans are better for showing off my hard work in the gym, than a pair of wide-leg jeans or slacks.

I got the jeggings in a size 6 instead of my normal size 4 at AEO, because I thought the tight legs might not fit on my strong legs otherwise. This was an error in judgement, because they get a little baggy in the legs with a few hours wear, and the waist is a bit too big. They aren't unwearable, but the material is stretchy enough that I could have ordered true to size despite my muscular legs that normally don't fit well in skinny jeans.

Oh, since I've talked about everything else I'm wearing in this outfit, the boots are by Merrell-- the style is called Yarra. The buttons on the side are strictly decorative, but they are large-calf friendly, very warm, waterproof and very comfortable. I've had them for about three years.
I broke a personal fashion rule... and I think I like it.
This is the first review I've written that wasn't featuring a brand that caters to busty women. Is that something that you'd like to see more of, or are reviews of brands that are hard to try on in person, like Urkye and BiuBiu, of more interest?
I've also decided that I love skinny jeans and they work best for me. The last time I needed jeans, I decided finally to listen to all the advice that I should get boot cut or flared jeans to balance my figure out. But when I take photos of myself for my blog in my new jeans, I look frumpy. When I take photos in my skinny jeans, I look great. You'd think that skinny jeans would make me look top-heavy like a lollipop, but I just don't think they do. I haven't figured out why the "boot cut/flared jeans" rule doesn't work for me, but it doesn't.
ReplyDeleteI went over to your blog, Darlene, to check it out! I can kind of see what you are saying, though. If you don't mind my two cents, I think that it's because the jeans are too wide/ unfitted at the thigh and knee (though I bet they are super comfortable!), and your lower body ends up looking wider than it actually is.
DeleteI actually am starting to think slimmer fit jeans might be more flattering on myself (I never thought I would)! Since I have fairly large, muscular thighs that taper to the knee, I think that the lower half of my body looks wider if I'm wearing wide-leg or untapered pants that are as wide at thigh all the way to the hem (though I do have a few exceptions, they are fairly fitted till mid-thigh, which I think shows that my legs have structure). I think the effect is better if it tapers in toward the knee, but doesn't taper past the knee (this is a pet peeve, since I'm shorter than average-- clinging just past knee/ to the very top of my calves makes my legs look weirdly curved and short. So many pants do that on me)!
I think wide legs and bootcut/ flare can work, but I think at least in my case, a tighter top that really showcases the waist is needed for the look to stay flattering and to retain a shapely profile (a more modest semi-fitted top doesn't work very well).
I'm still really trying to figure out the best pants/ jeans fit for my body. I just don't know! I do know shorter skirts (as far down as knee-length) look good on me, but I don't like the look nearly as much with tights/ socks (making it totally useless for winter, until I can figure out how to feel comfortable in that combo).
First of all, I think you look absolutely amazing in those pants and boots! I don't see why you'd have any reason to be ashamed of your legs, personally. They look shapely and great! Second of all, I just wanna steal that outfit in general :P Third of all, I really know what you mean with the flared/bell pants. I used to only wear that style until I gave skinnies a chance and just like you I saw how useful and flattering they could be.
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is, I don't really care for the look of flared jeans anymore, yet I love the look of chunky winter boots with skinny jeans. I feel like they really flatter/balance out the other curves of my body, which I suppose is what flared jeans are supposed to do.
Maybe the difference is that skinny jeans accentuate more of the leg, since boots typically come up somewhere mid-calf, while flared jeans usually flare from the knee and swamp out the curves of the legs.
The boots you have look great, but I'd be interested to see if you also liked the look of some bulkier fur, like I do.
Anyways, great post!
Thanks, BeingCurvy! I had that hoody in storage waiting for winter, so I was happily surprised to find it again-- I like the color and the shape is great (so great that I have the exact same style in blue with a different screenprint, as well)!
DeleteI actually would love to have chunkier and slightly taller boots to wear with these (bulky furry boots, yes-- I've tried many on over the past year), but I try only to buy shoes that will age well and are good quality/ waterproof/ practical/ etc, and I haven't found any yet that check all those boxes that are also cute and more bulky (at least for a price that I'm willing to pay.
Thanks for your comment! :D
OK so I pretty much jumped on the skinny jean bandwagon, and haven't looked back. And I am not skinny at all. And probably more of a pear than an hourglass! And I am totally on the colored skinny pants bandwagon.
ReplyDeleteAnd as much as I am "not" supposed to be wearing these, everyone else seems to agree they look cute. Just choose your shirt wisely. I have been on a kick of a peplum top or blousy gathered top with skinny jeans. I like it as long as the peplum isn't too stiff.
I owe Darlene a blog post about my fall finds. I finally got everything, and included is a whole bunch of skinny pants. ;)
I fell in love with Skinny jeans about a month ago, and I am never looking back. I know that some people think that plus size (I wear a 20/22 in pants) women should not wear fitted pants....but I swear....my skinnies look the best! LOVE them!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, and yay for stepping out of your comfort zone!!
