Urkye order updates!

It's been over 4 months since I placed and received my Urkye order, so I thought I would post an update! I also just placed another Urkye order (I'm posting that on here so I will hopefully get reviews up faster once I receive it-- but it hasn't shipped yet), so it seemed like a good time to explain what I ordered this time around, and why.

Sleeveless shirts (click for original review).

I still love these and wear them all the time, but now I layer them (they look great with shrugs/ boleros) for fall weather. I really want to find a few more shrugs, but I find them difficult to locate in a style that I would wear in non-plus-sizes at a reasonable price. For now, I wear them with my yellow shrug and a coat on warmer days, or with my long-sleeved, black Hind shrug (a thermal shrug for winter running, with long sleeves-- note that it doesn't completely cover my bust, unlike in the picture, so I normally wear it as an under-layer so it doesn't look strange), by itself on chilly days or under a coat if it's cold.

In my original review, I said that though the tuba style was very flattering, I needed to check it on occasion to make sure my bra straps weren't visible. I'm not sure if the sleeves changed shape slightly with washing, or if I just got better at putting it on, but I haven't needed to worry about that at all after the first few wears. This has become a non-issue, and since I find the neckline so flattering and unique, I got a few more in my new order.

These shirts have held up really well and still look great! Since they are incredibly flattering and have held up so well, I ordered a few more in the tuba style in different colors (black and grey). The colors other than green that are available wouldn't be very flattering with my skin tone (too bright and saturated), so I stuck with neutral colors that I know work well for me.

Button up shirt and dress (click for original review).

You'll have to ask Boosaurus about the button up shirt! Last I've heard, it's one of her favorite items to wear, though. Unfortunately, they haven't produced a new design of button-up shirts yet for public sale (I'm sure they are time-consuming to design and manufacture), so I couldn't order any this time around. The shirt looks flattering to me now, when I look at the picture of it on, but I didn't feel good about how it looked in real life, and I'm sticking with my gut on this one.

I ended up with a surfeit of dresses this summer, so I haven't worn the Turkus yet, since it's only gotten cool in the past week and I haven't had an appropriate occasion yet. I think I need to run it by one of my good friends, so I feel a little bit more confident in it, because it is quite different from my default style. Since I do have so many new dresses, I didn't get any dresses on this order, though I think the circle skirt style is adorable.

Sleeved tops (click for original review).

This is a less positive area, for me. The beige shirt is still functional, wearing acceptably well though less well than the sleeveless tops, and remains very flattering (they both were, I wore them all the time), but sadly the black/ mocca one was shredded in the wash a few weeks ago.

This is a post I've been dithering about writing for a few weeks, because it is not my intention to post negative publicity about a very promising (and already pretty freaking awesome) young company. However, in the interest of being honest and to share information that I think will be helpful to others, I've decided to post this, as honestly as possible.

I had been washing the black version of this shirt on the gentle cycle with cold water and Woolite dark to keep the color from fading, but unfortunate circumstances (our dryer was broken for about 2 months, during which I had to hang dry all my clothing in limited space that I share with my fiance-- I got really behind on laundry) led to me taking a short cut, and washing my dark colored jeans (which I also wash with Woolite dark) in the same load (normally I'll separate shirts and jeans).

In addition, I normally hang dry all my Urkye shirts because I love them and want them to stay nice as long as possible, but since we finally had a clothes dryer and I had 5 loads of clothing laundry to wash, I just dumped the whole load in the dryer.

Easier to see the holes with the shirt
flipped inside out.
I pulled out this shirt first thing to wear, and noticed that it was all tangled up with other clothing, especially due to the ties. This did not occur with the beige shirt, so it may have just been bad luck... but this is what happened (picture of the bottom right side of the shirt, near the hem-- this was the only damaged area).

I mentioned this to Urkye, and they said that because the material is so delicate, they probably won't make any new shirts with this material, as it does require special handling.

This is not to say that it's not a wonderful shirt and design-- it is! But I'd suggest hand washing, or washing on the gentle cycle with other delicate shirts, not jeans or pants that might snag it.

On a more positive note, the remainder of my recent Urkye order was two cardigans (a warmer-looking charcoal gray-- Dziergany grafit, and a lighter-weight red one-- Szalowa wisnia,to wear with my neutral colored tops-- I like to have a splash of color, especially in cold weather)! Another winter choice, was Dzwonek w granatach (though I wanted the green one, this style had depleted stock and most were sold out in my size already!) For year round wear, I got a Wodnik in gray (the "water shirt" with cascading fabric in the back-- such a neat design, and I love back details, which are so rarely seen in shirts that can be worn by busty women), and several Kokarda shirts (muted plum shade, and oatmeal shade-- both great tones for my compexion, and the style looks incredibly flattering to me!)

I'm sad about my damaged Groszki mocca, but I haven't tossed it yet. Since only the bottom of the shirt was damaged, I'm trying to figure out if I could just remove the lower portion of the shirt and wear it as a sort-of-shrug, over shirts that don't provide enough coverage up top? It's worth a try!

  1. Wow, I'm shocked to see all those holes! I'm afraid that I didn't understand you properly last time, I thought that some hmm... how to name it.. something like this: http://lh3.ggpht.com/_79GNhEibId4/TF8g_kiJRpI/AAAAAAAACLw/I1KDhNUw_wE/UA%20HG%20Tee%20mechacenie.JPG happened to Groszki after washing with jeans.
This is the first time holes've appeared in our clothes. I'm afraid that you probably put too many clothes to machine or maybe part of top was caught somehow by machine during tumbling and that could be a reason? I have no idea why something like this happened but I can reassure you, that something like this has never happened before.
By the way, we always recommend not to tumble dry - then clothes last longer:)

    1. Hi Urkye!

It is really unfortunate-- I can honestly say that I think it was a combination of delicate material and really bad luck, especially if this has happened to no one else. The machine was not overloaded, but the shirt did get all wrapped up with other clothing in the dryer, to an extent that I've never seen before, and maybe the combination did something? This is a new dryer that has not snagged any other clothing (our old one ate a few pairs of underwear, which is one reason we finally junked it).

One possibility that I didn't think of is that my young cat may have gotten into my laundry and found the shirt-- it seems unlikely, but it could happen. The holes do look kind of "chewed on." Hmmmmm. If that were the case, though, I'd expect the ties to be damaged as well, as that would be the only part that could entice him to play with my clothing. It is possible, though-- I don't see how the dryer or washer could have done it.

I really prefer the feeling of pants (especially jeans) when tumble dried, but we have very hard water where I live, I think that's part of the reason. Pants are stiff and can actually be sharp/ scratch when hung to dry. I do hang dry most of my Polish-originating clothing, just because I love them extra. :) Most shirts I don't care that much about.

  2. Sadly, I've had a few issues with my clothes as well. I know Urkye is a new company, so I haven't let this put me off future orders, but it's disappointing that everything in my first order is not in good condition after just a few times of wearing it. I got the bialy kontrast, groszki latte and groszki mocca. I washed them all inside-out in cold water. The kontrast I dry on a wooden hanger. The groszki I wash in a lingere bag because in the past I have had shirts with ties get tangled up and rip, and I dry them flat on a drying rack. In short, I think I have tried to treat them delicately.

The groszki both have pilling, and the black one has faded quite a bit - the color is similar to what is shown in your photo. They are hole-free, though. The kontrast was actually more of a disappointment because I saw some damage after the very first wash, before I had even worn it once! The black material that runs near the buttons was fraying, and shedding fibers all over the white fabric of the shirt. I had to snip some of it away to tidy it a bit. It looks like it must have snagged on something. (I probably should have returned it like you did, because the buttons are under strain and there is slight gaping.)

I am hoping that as the brand evolves there will be more knowledge to apply to fabric selection.

    1. Ann, I'm sorry to hear about the Kontrast and Grotszki. Both of my Grotszki's do have pilling, you can see it in the black photo but it's also on the beige one, to a less visible extent. I still wore them and get compliments on them, but it is definitely a minus (I normally stop wearing shirts to work and such when they have obvious pilling, as I think it doesn't look as professional).

Considering that it was their very first release of items for retail sale, I'm not surprised that some of the materials didn't end up absolutely perfect, but I like the style and fit so much that I would not let it put me off (it does mean that I DIDN'T reorder the Groszki mocca though, because I know it probably won't age very well-- despite my gentler care). I'm hopeful that like BiuBiu, over time, their material quality will improve as they get more customer feedback. Urkye is very responsive, in my experience, which I appreciate.

I hadn't heard that about the Kontrast, that the black material is prone to shredding, so it's good to know-- I guess a more durable material (maybe like ribbon?) would be better used for the edging in the future.

That said, their sleeveless shirt material is fabulous and aging very well, and I think they are using more durable fabrics like that in their newer designs, so hopefully you won't have any issues with future orders!

    2. I'm glad to hear that the new products seem to be standing up a bit better. I have been taking the more cautious approach of ordering one thing from Urkye and more from BiuBiu. I got the Skołowana czerwona and so far the only issue that I have noticed is that the black is somewhat dulled by red threads which get caught in it during washing, but this can happen to any multi-colored garment and it's the reason that clothing tape exists.

I hadn't actually given them feedback on my experience with the materials, but since there was a response to your blog perhaps they've read my post as well.

Of course my #1 bit of feedback for Urkye is to introduce a oooo for fitted shirts. I had to add a snap to the Kontrast to keep it from gaping.

    3. I'm still waiting for my newest order to arrive, it's taking a while to get over the pond I guess!

They have been very responsive so far (I sent a comment to them about the shirt when I placed my newest order to let them know I had a problem with the groszki, and they emailed me within a day or two-- they don't only reply to bloggers/ public feedback, just so you know).

I definitely do think they listen to and welcome customer feedback, so hopefully they'll see your comment here! I thought the ooo was pretty generous compared to the measurements given, but I am admittedly not the most extreme hourglass, just a standard one.

Regarding materials - now we cooperate with a new producer of jersey and their quality is very good - we run a lot of tests and we're satisfied with results. We hope you'll like this material too:)

    5. I guess you've read what I've written here already, but in the future I'll also email or mention it on FB.

I understand that you're a new company, and that's why I have ordered new products from you despite not being 100% happy with the durability of the previous products. I like what you're trying to do, and I think your prices are quite fair and your designs are nice, so I want to encourage that.

  3. Updating after several months of wear is a great idea!

I have definitely noticed that the Groszki (I have the beige one) is more delicate, and the attached tie seems to make the issue a bit worse, as it can catch and pull the fabric of the shirt. I have noticed a bit of wear around the underbust seam, but I've been really careful with it (gentle/cold cycle, always air drying) and haven't worn it too frequently, so it's held up very well comparatively. But I do respect that Urkye realizes that the material is difficult to manage in real-life wearing.

The Kontrast (button-up) has also held up well, although as bold of a color as it is (and as it's shorter than I'm used to wearing, just because I'm used to having to buy button-ups ridiculously large) means that it hasn't gotten as large an amount of wear. But I love the structured fit for certain occasions.

The Francuski shirt I've worn the most and has held up quite well - the fabric seems very sturdy. I like it so much that I ordered another!

In regards to care, I always do cold/delicate wash, but I haven't had to be too careful about what else I put in the wash with the shirts (as long as they're also darks and not super-heavy items). I always have air-dried them, as I do with any other delicate shirts or shirts that I'm afraid will shrink - it's just something I'm super-careful about. I'm sure some BiuBiu/Urkye items could be dried in the dryer safely, but I'm afraid to take the chance!

I have an Urkye order on the way as well, and can't wait to try/review! :)

  4. A bit of bad news about my Skołowana czerwona dress, which I'm wearing now for the third time. Because of the circle skirt there is a lot of fabric, which means that there is a fair amount of weight pulling down. The fabric is rather stretchy. So today I noticed that the back neck no longer lies flat, it's almost cowl-like. I am hoping that it will snap back into shape with the next wash, but I'm not sure.

The first two times I washed it I dried it lying flat on top of a clothing rack because I was worried about just this thing. The third time I was on a trip, so I didn't have access to a clothing rack. I dried it on a thick wooden hanger, but because it really looked like the fabric was being stretched I went through the tedious process of ironing it to speed the drying. Yet it seems this was in vain.

Since I cover the back with a shrug it isn't visible, but I am a bit disappointed about this. I don't want to have to dry it flat and store it flat. I'm not unsympathetic with my laundry, but I am not going to hand-wash everything. I want clothing to be able to stand up to machine washing (inside out, possibly in a delicates bag) and line/hanger drying.
