Sports bras: Strapped down, and ready to rumble!

As I've established, exercise is a very important part of my life. It's also one of the areas where I don't care about looking stylish or dressing in a flattering matter-- to be honest, if I'm working out, I want to be red in the face, huffing and puffing, and covered in sweat. Anything less means I'm not going to get the best results for my time, and I don't have the time to waste (even on something that is important, because it's not something I find particularly enjoyable).

Therefore, I don't spend a lot of time shopping for sports bras or trying to find the best ones-- this is the one type of bra where how it looks on really doesn't matter much to me. There are three important parameters:

Do my breasts move?
Do I have full range of motion?
Is it comfortable enough for an hour or two?

Of those, the first one is by far the most important.

I don't care what shape my boobs are or whether I have uniboob-- as long as my breasts are not moving around as I athleticize... I don't care how it looks.

After that glowing, romantic description:
here's some sports bras that I have, and that work well.

Shock Absorber-- these are currently my favorite large bra-size range sports bras. You can generally get them on ebay CHEAP which is a big bonus to me (make sure to mark the "Worldwide" seller option, as the majority of great prices are found in the UK). The shape is... generally not very flattering in the more supportive styles. However, that doesn't matter to me because in the right size, your assets won't move an inch.

Great back design-- very supportive,
not too difficult to actually put on.
I have two shock absorbers right now: This style in an older colorway (mine is red with purple and orange piping)...
I do love color...

Oooh... la la?
...and this extremely basic number.

Believe it or not, these pictures are more flattering than the reality, on least on me! The colorful bra smashes me flat and gives me uniboob. The white bra (named Support level 4 for D+) has a very torpedo-like profile. What matters to me is that nothing will move in these bras, absolutely nothing.

The sizing on these styles run very tight. My ribcage measurement (used for my bra band size) is about 29 inches, I normally wear 28 bands or 30 bands. I absolutely cannot go smaller than a 30 band in Shock Absorber, and if you are close to the band size (say, you measure at 32 inches ribcage and normally wear a 32-- I'd recommend ordering the 34 band). and I'd generally recommend ordering a cup-size up (unless you already increased your band size), unless you are at the smaller end for that cup size. I wear a 28GG or a 30G in Freya, and a 30GG fits well in Shock Absorber.

Now, I admit that I might try and love Freya's sports bras, but they are dificult to find at a significant discount right now, and I can't justify spending 40-60 dollars for a sports bra on my budget, no matter how cute. When they start discontinuing colors, and hopefully show up online cheap, I will probably give them a try because Freya bras have so far been the absolute best shape for my body, and they have some very, very cute styles. But for now, I'm happy enough with my current selection.

I have a few other sports bras as well, that fit terribly but keep my breasts smooshed so flat they can't move. These bras are not designed for the larger breasted, and man, can you ever tell-- massive quadboob. I don't wear these if I have a choice, anymore, but if I don't have anything else clean, they will do in a pinch.

I have this Under Armour reversible sports bra (in a dark blue with light blue underlayer color). The double layers and material holds things completely immobile, but since I had to get it in a size small to fit my ribcage well, I have terrible quad boob (hex boob, even-- breast tissue pokes out above the cups and next to the armpits). It also requires a lot of strength and flexibility to get on, as the material is very firm, and there are no hooks in the back (and it sucks to get off after a tiring workout-- I sometimes have to take a break with it wedged around my shoulders). I believe I got this at TJ Maxx while I was still losing weight for about $10.

Finally, I have a Nike sports bra that appears to have been discontinued-- in size small/ C/D (though mine is white). (Although the size range was very limited, it was nice that they sort of acknowledged that larger breasts can be on a small frame). Once again, I have terrible quadboob because there's just not enough room for me, but the band is reasonable on the smallest hook, and the material firm enough to keep things contained. This was again, a during-weight loss purchase, since I was still hoping that I would lose a few cup sizes when I got to a healthy weight for my body.

Exercise clothing is really not designed for the naturally curvy, at least not in the U.S. Does anyone else know of good athletic wear brands for the well endowed?

  1. Have you tried Panache Sport? It's excellent! I have Shock Absorber (the same as you but in black), Royce Impact free, Freya Jet and Panache Sport. I have to say, that Panache is my favourite one:) It gives excellent shape and support while Freya and Shock Absorber give just support;) Royce is not as good as them, so I don't recommend it.
I wrote reviews for them several months ago, you can translate using google and read if you wish :) http://stanikomania.blox.pl/2012/01/Biust-w-ruchu-Freya-Active-Soft-Cup-vs-Shock.html and here: http://stanikomania.blox.pl/2012/05/Biust-w-ruchu-Panache-Sport-rozmiar-30GG.html

    1. Thanks for the comment, urkye!

I read your excellent reviews (although Google translate does always manage to lose something in translation), and they are really helpful!

So it sounds like the Freya Sport (non underwire) might chafe a bit for longer activities and gives torpedo boobs, the shock absorber doesn't chafe but does smoosh your boobies flat (I have the same model, so I understand), and the panache gives great shape and feels great on, but they recommend hand washing due to the underwire, and it'll take longer to dry due to the molding. I wonder about the underwired Freya bras since Freya normally fits me better, but I am reconsidering Panache now. Thanks again! XD Really helpful!
